A new program, supported by the City of Quesnel, looks to tackle long-standing food security issues in the community.
Though, Quesnel Mayor Bob Simpson says that, in reality, it’s more of a food re-distribution challenge than a supply issue.
He says grocery stores in the community are frequently forced to dispose of food no longer suitable for shelves, which still has nutritional value.
Sprout Kithcen is a Quesnel-based initiative which serves the area between Vanderhoof and 100 Mile House, and hopes to tackle this challenge.
The project is intended to create a more local supply chain that will be less impacted by major disruptions, such as the flooding in the South.
It also offers local businesses shared food processing infrastructure, capable of processing, storing, and keeping food nutritious past its grocery store shelf life.
