Both the BC Liberals and Greens have come together to call on the NDP to extend the licensing deadline for groundwater users.
All wells accessed by non-domestic users are required to have a provincial water license.
Historical groundwater users were given until March of next year to apply for licenses to align their wells with the modern compliance system.
However, to date, out of the roughly 20,000 historical groundwater users in BC, only an estimated 4,000 have applied for licensing.
According to the Greens and Liberals, the lack of applications is due to a failure by the NDP to adequately reach out to those impacted by the changes.
Now, they are calling for the NDP to extend the deadline and improve communication, or risk thousands of residents becoming illegal groundwater users.
