Ottawa is setting aside 40 billion dollars to compensate Indigenous Children and improve the child welfare system, after 5 years of court battles.
Crown Relations Minister Marc Miller announced the funding this afternoon, a day ahead of their fall economic statement.
In September, a Canadian Human Rights Tribunal had ordered Ottawa to pay 40 thousand in compensation to all children who suffered under the on-reserve child welfare system since 2006.
It also ordered them responsible for equal payments to children denied Jordan’s Principle coverage between 2007 and 2017.
In October, the Liberals announced they would continue to appeal the decision, before pausing litigation to work on an out-of-court settlement.
A deadline to work on a settlement was set for the end of this month.
While the announcement is a move in the right direction, it is not a final agreement, with neither the details nor final investment amount being finalized.
Miller says the funding will be split between compensating children and families, and instituting long-term changes to the child welfare system.
