Skeena-Bulkley Valley MP Taylor Bachrach has tabled a private member’s Bill which would see Canada drop its voting age.
Last year, Senator Marilou McPhedran sponsored a bill in the Senate which would see the legal federal voting age dropped to 16.
Earlier this month, a legal challenge to lower the age to 16 was filed in Ontario and received support across the country.
Similarly, Bachrach’s proposal would also see the legal age drop from the current 18 to 16.
Bachrach says he became inspired by the efforts of Canadian youth to bring the matter before the courts, and that their voices deserve to be heard.
Bachrach’s Bill will come up for debate in the House of Commons during next year’s sessions.
