North Coast residents are being warned of illegal, and possibly unsafe, shellfish being sold in the area.
Fisheries and Oceans Canada is warning residents not to consume any clams, cockles, or bivalves currently being sold on the Northcoast.
All fish being sold legally in Canada must first be inspected, and must be sold through a federally or provincially licensed facility.
Currently, the entire North Coast area is closed to commercial shellfish harvesting, and any sales of fish caught locally are illegal.
Consumption of shellfish that have not been properly inspected can lead to serious disease, and possible death, and boiling will not kill toxins.
