A group of more than 60 Smithers residents have taken issue with District plans to amend a zoning bylaw’s text.
That amendment would allow for a crematorium to be built at 3844 Henry Road, currently zoned M1A.
The amendment, which received its 2nd reading in November, would alter the Bylaw’s text to allow the M1A zoning category to include crematoriums.
72 residents and supporters have signed a petition in opposition to the changes, which was presented to the Regional District of Bulkley-Nechako during a recent public hearing.
In the petition, signatories bring up a number of concerns, including: negative impacts on the aesthetics of the community, possible water and waste management issues, noise and smell, and the release of toxic pollutants.
Those concerns were echoed during a virtual public hearing held on Zoom last night by the District, which drew dozens of participants.
Attendees to the meeting say that they are not against a crematorium, nor do they doubt the community’s need for one, they are simply against the location choice.
Prospective site operator Laurel Menzel also presented data on the equipment, as well as emissions impacts in other communities, and a list of individuals in favour of the proposed site.
A final decision is set to be made on December 16th, at the Board’s regularly scheduled meeting.
