Members of the Nisga’a Nation are getting a Christmas surprise, though they won’t be able to access it until next year.
Each Nisga’a citizen can expect to see 2,500 dollars from a 20 million dollar federal loan repayment program.
That program stems from a 2019 commitment to forgive all debt racked up by Indigenous groups during treaty negotiations.
As the Nisga’a Lisims Government had already paid their debt off in 2014, they are expecting 78 million dollars in reimbursement payments over the next 5 years.
Citizens who are under 18 years of age will have their payments put in to a trust, and those under 18 who are not registered should do so by March to benefit.
All citizens should ensure the NLG has the most up to date information in order to ensure they receive their funds.
