Northern Health has issued an overdose alert for the Quesnel area after an increase in events related to a specific substance in the community.
That substance begins as light purple or blue powder or pebbles sold as down, and turns pink in colour when broken apart.
It is a highly toxic substance which causes heavy and prolonged sedation and requires a large amount of naloxone to reverse.
Overdoses occur when the substance is injected, the first signs of which are choking, gurgling, and/ or snoring sounds.
Northern Health has issued a number of safety tips including, moderated use, buddying up if you intend to use drugs, and downloading the Lifeguard or BeSafe apps from Toward the Heart.
