A letter signed by more than a thousand Canadian Academics directs 7 calls to action towards Canada regarding the recent disputes on Wet’suwet’en territory.
In the letter they say that Canada is, as it has historically, using their laws as a weapon against Indigenous Peoples and their rights.
Signatories are strongly condemning the aggressive actions by the RCMP in enforcing Coastal GasLink’s injunction.
It goes on to call Canada and BC’s actions a complete disregard for both Indigenous sovereignty and environmental protection.
They are calling for the injunction to be immediately lifted, RCMP removal from the area, and for CGL to drop all charges stemming from the November raid.
In addition, they call for the immediate cancellation of exclusion zones on Indigenous territory, an examination in to the use of injunctions against Indigenous Peoples, a pursuit of decarbonization without use of natural gas, the cancellation of pipeline permits, and for Indigenous Title and Rights to be upheld.
