MP Taylor Bachrach says he wants to see an investigation into the actions of the RCMP after so many arrests were made at the Morice forest service road over the past couple of weeks.
Bachrach called upon the federal public safety minister Marco Mendicino to order an investigation. The MP added that the world is watching as unarmed indigenous people were arrested at gunpoint and many indigenous leaders were horrified at what took place.
Mendicino responded by telling Bachrach the government had previously expressed concern about the way the police operation was carried out and the situation is being monitored closely.
Bachrach’s questioning follows the release of a video showing the interaction between officers and protesters.
Speaking on behalf of the RCMP, Cpl Madonna Saunderson said that police don’t have the option to refuse to enforce injunctions and court orders.
The RCMP access control point on the Morice forest service road was removed last Saturday and police have returned to their original maintained presence with roving patrols in the area.
