Residents of Fort St John should be aware of a new scam which seems to be disproportionally targeting the area.
Targets of the scam will receive a phone call claiming to be from the Canada Border Service Agency regarding a package being held at the border.
Recipients are told that the package contains a suspicious substance and that an arrest warrant has been issued, then asking them to dial 1 to speak with an agent.
At which point, the call is transferred to the scammer, who will try to get personal information from the target.
Scammers are using caller ID spoofing technology to make it look like the call is actually from the government.
Residents are reminded to never provide personal info, banking information, or social security numbers over the phone, and that the Border Agency does not issue arrest warrants over the phone.
