Use of Volunteer Fire Halls for community events has become a hot issue in the Cariboo in recent weeks.
During their regular meeting last week, Regional District Directors addressed the concerns of community organizations over the use of the Halls.
In the past, the Fire Halls have simultaneously served as meeting venues for local organizations, but recently they have been turned away.
In some small communities, the Halls represent the only suitable, available, locations to host their events.
But, concerns over safety, liability, and intended use of the facilities, have arisen since the Halls began adhering to stricter legislation.
District Directors say that, while they agree the Halls are needed for community groups in some localities, it is hard to enforce without a formal protocol.
So, the Directors have asked staff to consult with Fire Chiefs and develop a draft report the conditions under which the Halls can be used.
