Temporary Bunkhouse Set Up at Smithers Homeless Encampment

A temporary bunkhouse has been set up for residents of a homeless encampment in Smithers.

Located at Veteran’s Peace Park, the structure will draw electricity from the nearby Public Library, and will shelter 10 individuals.

Delivered yesterday, the Town’s Council approved the temporary use of the structure during a previous council meeting.

Costs to set up, operate, and eventually take down the bunkhouse will be covered by the BC Housing Authority.

Insulated for the winter, the bunkhouse is a temporary solution to a larger problem for which both the Town, and Authority are seeking permanent solutions.
