An audit looking in to the ground transportation service level in Northern BC has resulted in three recommendations, and a number of other findings.
Titled “Ensuring Long-distance Ground Transportation in Northern BC”, the audit looked in to the promises made by BC following Greyhound’s departure in 2018.
It found that, while the Ministry worked with BC Transit to found and operate the BC Bus North program for three times as long as intended, it still failed to meet Greyhound’s service level.
Bus North covered 35 of the previous 62 stops within 10 kms of a Northern community, and while Greyhound ran daily, Bus North runs once or twice a week.
In 2020, the scope of the program shifted from just covering Northern BC to all of BC, which the audit says may be detrimental to Northern service.
They have made three recommendations for government: ensure the proper review and monitoring of info as initially outlined, ensure the new province-wide plan contains sustainable solutions for the north, and ensure broad planning and engagement with northern communities on a ground transportation solution.
