District of Kitimat Councilors are getting a pay raise, but it didn’t come without debate.
Council approved the pay increase, which is retroactive to January of this year, in an effort to realign their pay with that of similar councils.
In total, councilors will see their annual remuneration go from 20,038 dollars to 25,025, while the Mayor’s salary will go from 40,821 to 45,100 dollars.
Councilors Feldhoff and Goffinet both opposed the changes, saying it was unfair to ask for an increase that large in the current financial climate.
But ultimately, Council determined it would allow them to attract more residents to the prospect of running for council in next year’s municipal election.
The motion was passed by a vote of 3 to 2.
