Earlier this month, members of the Gitanmaax Band and their allies gathered in Hazelton to prevent a child from being taken to Ontario.
Yesterday, the BC Provincial Court ruled that the child was to remain in the care of her family, in her cultural home.
Legal representation for the Gitanmaax argued that the initial legal maneuver, which was filed without their notice, was reminiscent of the Residential School tragedy.
The girl is now safe, at home, in the care of her aunt, where she will live and attend school on her home territory, and continue to build a relationship with her mother and family.
