An Indigenous-led research project has shed a light on a lesser known, but still very serious, impact of Covid lockdowns.
According to the research, there has been a dramatic increase in partner violence against Indigenous women since the beginning of the pandemic.
Conducted by researchers at the University of Victoria, the project was led by the BC Association of Aboriginal Friendship Centres, and Battered Women’s Support Services.
Surveys were conducted by researchers in hopes of clearly identifying the barriers to proper care and protection for a group that sees 12 times the average number of missing and murdered women.
It is the goal of the research to provide social service organizations with the information needed to improve supports for Indigenous women and girls who are impacted by domestic abuse.
