Gitxsan and their allies gathered together in Hazelton on Sunday in a heroic display to keep a child at home.
Gitanmaax Hereditary Chiefs formed a road block with allies to prevent a six-year old Gitxsan child from being taken to Ontario.
The girl had previously been in the foster system but is a member of the Git’luuhl’um’hetxwit House, whose care and protection she is now under.
It is another example of a foster system which many say bares similarities to the Residential School System.
The Band says they have attempted to pursue avenues to keep children at home in the Courts, but have found the system doesn’t share their efforts to do so.
This comes as Canada continues to fight to withhold compensation from Indigenous children who fell victim to that same Residential School System.
