After facing an avalanche of backlash, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has issued an apology.
Trudeau decided to travel to Tofino last Thursday during the first ever National Day for Truth and Reconciliation.
It’s a holiday that Trudeau himself instated, after hundreds of unmarked graves were uncovered at a former Residential School on Tk’emlúps te Secwépemc territory.
Despite receiving two invitations to honour the new day for commemoration with the Tk’emlúps, Trudeau chose not to attend.
Trudeau apologized to Nation Chief Rosanne Casimir via phone call yesterday, and promised to visit the community soon.
During his first public address since the scandal, Trudeau called it a mistake, and said he regretted the decision.
When asked why he made the decision, Trudeau said the why was less important than that it had happened, apologizing again.
He promised to do more to advance Truth and Reconciliation in the future, and called the day a time to reflect and remember.
