A Unist’ot’en land defender has been recognized internationally for her efforts to protect her people’s land.
As a Wet’suwet’en Chief, Freda Huson has worked for years to protect the land and advocate against development projects that would harm it.
For her efforts, she was named a 2021 winner of the Right Livelihood Award, handed out annually by a Swedish organization.
It seeks to honour and assist individuals in inspiring meaningful and sustainable change to the world’s greatest challenges.
When asked about the award, Huson instead took the time to recognize everyone else who made her work possible.
Huson was given the award for her tireless efforts to take care of the land that we call home, something she hopes everyone can understand.
Huson says it’s time for people to wake up and do their part, and that time is running out to make a difference.
