New Westminster’s board of education is seeking out legal advice in order to find a way to make vaccines required for everyone working in the education system.
However, BC’s education minister has stated that educations needing to be fully vaccinated is not the same as health care workers needing to be fully vaccinated.
Jennifer Whiteside also went onto say that educators in BC reportedly have a high vaccination rate, but that public health staff are keeping an eye on the COVID situations in schools and they will make their decisions after their assessment.
Whiteside also mentioned that community vaccination rates are a good reflection of of cases in schools and that is important that everyone who can get vaccinated, does get vaccinated.
The teachers’ union hasn’t been able to find out how many of their members are vaccinated since teachers are not currently required to make their vaccination status known.
