Opioid deaths in this country continue to skyrocket, with more than 21 thousand opioid related deaths in the last 5 years.
According to data compiled by the Red Cross, 97 percent of those deaths were accidental.
In order to fight back against the crisis, they will now be providing training to identify opioid poisoning to all of their CPR programs in Canada.
Funding for the program upgrade comes from Health Canada’s Substance Use and Addictions Program, which aims to reduce opioid related deaths by increasing training and education.
Under the program, the Red Cross will also look to identify the communities most at risk of opioid misuse.
in total, the program is expected to train roughly 1.5 million Canadians in the next three years.
