With heat waves and wildfires dominating the BC news cycle this summer, the First Nations Leadership Council is speaking up.
In a letter released yesterday, the FNLC is calling for both the Governments of Canada and BC to take immediate action to quell climate change.
The letter comes following a UN report which shows Earth’s surface temperature having already increased by 1.09 degrees, and threatening to jump by up to 2 degrees in the next few decades.
UBCIC President, Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, says the idea that we need to rely on the fossil fuels industry to drive change is absurd.
He says it’s time for the Province and Country to recognize Indigenous rights to informed consent.
The FNLC says the first step is to halt all government subsidies paid to the fossil fuels industry.
Chief Terry Teegee says quick and aggressive actions by the government are required, and he hopes climate change is centre stage in the upcoming federal election.
