Three BC First Nations are calling for the Province to heavily revise a forestry plan proposed earlier in the summer.
The Tsilhqot’in, Lake Babine, and Carrier Sekani First Nations released a joint statement on the Forestry Intentions Paper.
According to the Nations, the Paper fails to address Aboriginal and Title Rights consistent with UNDRIP.
They say the Paper was created without Indigenous participation, and does not commit to transformative forestry work.
Just a few of the fundamental changes they outline include: implementing title rights by transitioning in to land returns in forestry sectors, managing forests in a way that enhances and upholds Indigenous culture and values, and improving revenue sharing with First Nations.
They are calling on the Crown to co-develop a revised paper with them.
