The BC First Nations Justice Council are launching a new, free to read, book which looks to guide criminal justice employees in their understanding of Gladue Rights.
Gladue rights seek to lessen the overrepresentation of Indigenous people in jails by forcing judges to review cases based on their unique circumstances and background factors.
Professor Benjamin Ralston, the book’s author, hopes the literature can serve as a manual for all those in the criminal justice industry.
The book’s release comes as Crown prosecutors look to increase the prison sentence given to Bradley Barton for the death of Cindy Gladue, the namesake for Gladue rights.
