The Ministry of Fisheries, Oceans, as well as the Canadian Coast Guard gave an announcement back on Tuesday that part of a $50 million fund is being sent to the small craft harbours of Prince Rupert, Port Edward, and the Haida Gwaii area so they could receive their much due upgrades.
The general manager of the Port Edward Harbour Authority stated that they are a rather unique, non-profit organization that is in charge of three different harbours in the town of Prince Rupert, and the Port Edward Harbour waterfront.
Those facilities have typically seen 1900 to 2100 Ocean vessels stop by their harbours annually.
In addition to RushBrook getting repairs that were very much needed, Port Edward will be able to to complete their construction of the concrete wharf, as well as install the electrical services in the dry dock area, replace the deck outside of the north finger, get rid of Wharf 600 and see if the flotation on their gillnet dock is holding up.
And even more funding in the form of $22 million will be handed out to support other smaller craft harbours throughout B.C. including, Port Clements in Haida Gwaii getting wharf and float reconstruction, the repair of mooring buoys that aren’t in the best condition to ensure boater safety in the Oona River. And Queen Charlotte will also be getting repairs for their breakwater mooring.
