A lightning caused fire south of Quesnel was quickly put out thanks to an ‘all hands on deck’ effort and a mine employee who was paying very good attention.
McLeese Lake Volunteer Fire Department member Ian Hicks stated that back around 11 a.m. on Wednesday, a mine worker that was working above the Gibraltar Mine railings storage facility saw some smoke on Beaver Lake Road.
Both the mine authority and the forestry service were immediately told of the smoke sighting.
As the flames fizzled thanks to water dropped by a helicopter, the forestry crew on the ground laid out some hoses and within three hours, the fire was snuffed out.
It is believed that the fire was caused by a lightning strike that hit a tree a few weeks earlier and that the fire only completely emerged when the winds came up.
