The Lower Post Residential School was once used as a post office and band office, and will be torn down and replaced by a multi-use building.
The project will cost $13.5-million in funding, the bulk of which is coming from the federal government. The provincial government, as well as the Daylu Dena Council, is also contributing funding.
Premier John Horgan says when he walked into the residential school building in 2019, he saw the pain and trauma it caused. He says he hopes the new community centre will be “a place of healing, hope, and well-being.”
Deputy chief, Harlan Schilling of the Daylu Dena Council says the building was a “painful reminder of the past.” He hopes its demolition and the construction of a new building “will be a safe place for people to feel proud and happy to enter each day.”
Construction is expected to begin this summer, and be completed by next year.
