The Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs are supporting the Wet’suwet’en in the ongoing dispute over the Coastal GasLink pipeline.
In a statement Gitanyow President Malii/Glen Williams said, “We are appalled at the treatment of our neighbours the Wet’suwet’en at the hands of the RCMP, acting on behalf of corporate interests and in complete disregard for Wetsuwet’en law, the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and calls for justice from international legal observers.”
Members of Gitanyow and Gitwangak blocked industrial traffic at the junction of Highway 16 and 37 for 24 hours. Gitanyow members have made individual donations to the Wet’suwet’en Legal Fund and the various camps that have been set up.
Malii goes on to say “In solidarity with the Wet’suwet’en we are donating $5,000 to the Unistoten Legal
Fund, and we are calling on all other Gitanyow and Gitxsan organizations to match our donation or
donate what they can.”
The Gitanyow Hereditary Chiefs are calling on both levels of government to revoke authorizations for
the Coastal Gaslink pipeline and respect the Indigenous laws of the Wet’suwet’en.
