The B.C. Supreme Court ruled today that there was no infringement of religious freedoms in the “smudging case”.
In November the Court heard from a parent in school district 70. The parent, Ms. Servatius was challenging a demonstration of Nuu-Chah-Nulth smudging in a classroom where her daughter and son were. Ms. Servatius claimed it infringed on their religious freedoms.
The Nuu-Chah-Nulth Tribal Council intervened because it was important for the Court to understand that smudging is part of their culture not religion. Ultimately the court found no infringement of religious freedoms.
