A new agreement between a northwest B.C. First Nation and the provincial trades body aims to expand community apprenticeships.
The Memorandum of Understanding is between the Industry Training Authority (ITA) and the Gitxsan Development Corporation (GDC).
The GDC says the MOU will allow it to support Gitxsan members in their trades training paths towards Red Seal accreditation.
The corporation has sponsored carpentry and heavy equipment operators at its Commercial Complex in South Hazelton and says it plans to offer other trades from its new training facility.
The agreement will allow the GDC to sponsor apprentices working on local projects, which it says means adding jobs as well as and an “appropriate cultural approach” to an apprenticeship pathway.
