Fort St. John RCMP says the cold weather has led to a spike in vehicle thefts.
Police say they’ve received numerous calls from drivers who left their vehicles unlocked while warming them up or who have hopped out at a convenience store, only to find them stolen when they return.
Mounties are reminding residents that the time it takes to turn off your vehicle and lock it up is a minor inconvenience compared to walking out to your truck or car and finding it gone.
Investigators say recent files could indicate that thieves are aware of the opportunity and are on the lookout for unlocked, running vehicles to target for theft.
Drivers who leave their vehicles unlocked and unattended can be issued a ticket under the Motor Vehicle Act with a fine of $81.
