A memorial tree honouring missing and murdered Indigenous women has been unveiled in Kitimat.
The tree is metallic and was welded by two grade 12 students. Trinity Harry, 17, Ojibway from the community of Little Black River. As well as Joseph Ginter, 16, Ojie-Cree and from the community of Garden Hill. They spent 300 hours creating the tree.
This tree represents the national crisis Indigenous women face in Canada. The tree will remain housed in the Kitimat Valley Institute.
Leaves will be added in the future to honour more women as well as honouring further welding classes.
The project was made possible by LNG Canada and CEO Peter Zebedee says that LNG is paying attention to the well-being and safety of the vulnerable members of Indigenous Communities.
