LNG Canada and its prime contractor have launched a program aimed at getting more women trained and hired for trades work on construction of the massive LNG project in Kitimat.
The YOUR PLACE program includes a four-week workplace readiness program designed to help women start in the skilled trades.
LNG Canada will cover the cost of tuition, safety gear, and learning materials as well as airfare and accommodations for participants outside the Kitimat area.
Graduates of the program will have a direct line to entry level jobs with prime contractor JGC Fluor or one of its subcontractors on the LNG Canada Project site
“Women in British Columbia currently represent just under 5% of a typical construction workforce, despite comprising 50% of the working population,” said Andy Calitz, CEO of LNG Canada in a news release. “This lack of diversity is not a women’s issue, it is a workplace issue. We are missing out on a talented demographic who will enter careers in the skilled construction trades and help British Columbia prosper. We want women to know there is a place for them on our Project.”
LNG Canada says it will be rolling out a province-wide awareness campaign about the program.
