Members of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs are calling for agencies, both federal and provincial, to take immediate action to mitigate the ecological impacts of last month’s Fraser River rockslide.
Now known as the Big Bar rockslide, the event occured west of Clinton late last month.
As a result of the slide, salmon populations attempting to make their way upstream have been almost entirely cut off.
According to a release from the Union this morning, reports pin the number of fish getting through at around 700.
In the same release, they say this restriction puts the food sovereignty of area First Nations at risk both now and in the coming years.
Along with the Fraser Salmon Management Council, the Union is calling for the DFO to restrict all salmon fishing in the area until a solution is developed.
They are also calling for agencies from all branches of government to come together to create an implimentation plan to limit the impacts.
