Two peaceful rallies are being held by Tsilhqot’in Nation members today to show opposition to a mining project on their territory.
Members of the Nation have long been against the Taseko Mines project which would see test pits drilled along over 70 kms of road.
According to Taseko, the drilling work is intended to prove the environment will not be harmed by their New Prosperity Gold and Copper Mine.
Last month, the Federal Court of Appeal refused to hear a challenge from the Nation regarding permits issued for the work.
An earlier BC Court of Appeal ruling had allowed the company to perform exploratory drilling in the area, near Williams Lake.
Last week, Taseko announced they intend to start moving in heavy equipment and road-clearing tools today.
In response, the Tsilhqot’in are holding the peaceful gatherings to show they do not give consent for the project.
They have maintained from the beginning that the land in question is sacred and spiritual to the Nation.
