In honour of National Indigenous People’s Day, an Act meant to protect Indigenous language has been passed in to law.
Governor General Julie Payette gave royal assent to the Indigenous Languages Act today, marking what is being called a historic achievement in language protection.
Bill C-91 is designed to preserve, protect, and promote all endangered Indigenous languages in Canada.
For BC, that means more than 90 dialects from over 34 distinct endangered languages.
With the Governor General’s assent, the Act will now become law.
