BC’s Auditor General did not hold back her criticism of BC’s contracted residential services for children in a new report.
Released today, the report found that the Ministry of Children and Family Development was not providing effected oversight of the services.
Contracted residential for youth in care provide housing, food, and supports for some of BC’s most vulnerable.
In the report, Auditor General Carol Bellringer, found that the Ministry has not set sufficient quality standards for the services to follow.
She also says that the Ministry is struggling to meet the individual needs of youth in care.
To highlight this, she brought up the practice of placing Indigenous youth without considering Indigenous culture.
Finally, she says a poor contract management framework has resulted in contracts going to providers who are not focused on providing the best outcomes for youth.
Four recommendations were made in the report, all of which have been accepted by the Ministry.
