Minister of Advanced Education Melanie Mark couldn’t hold back her excitement as she announced fresh funding for Indigenous teachers in BC.
Mark was at the Nicola Valley Institute of Technology today to a announce 2.7 million dollar investment in Indigenous teacher education training.
Currently, only 4 to 6 percent of teacher education graduates in the province are Indigenous.
1.4 million of the funding will go towards additional teaching education seats for Indigenous students.
In addition, 8 institutions across BC will each receive 50 thousand in funding to integrate Indigenous knowledge in to the curriculum.
Another 200 thousand will support curriculum co-ordination between the institutions and the Association of BC Deans.
NVIT will also get 730 thousand dollars for two masters programs included in a partnership with UBC.
