1.1 million dollars in wildfire mitigation projects in and around historic Barkerville have now been completed.
Plans to better protect the National Historic Site from wildfires began prior to the devastating 2017 fire season.
So far, work has been conducted to clear 10 metres of forest around the site as a fuel break, with the rest of the forest being trimmed and thinned.
So far, work has been funded by the Forest Enhancement Society of BC, though selling the chopped trees made back most of the expense.
But the clearing is just the beginning as the site hopes to begin more protection efforts in the coming weeks, with the approval of the BC Heritage Branch.
