The BC SPCA is investigating after a dog and her puppies were left to die at a dump west of Williams Lake.
The society says a Good Samaritan found the dog and her nine young in a sealed box at the Puntzi Lake Landfill June 5th.
The dogs spent the night at a local vet clinic before they were transferred to the Quesnel and District SPCA.
“There is no excuse for simply walking away from a pet and leaving them to die,” said Lorie Chortyk, the SPCA’s general manager of communications in a news release. “Abandoning animals is against the law and individuals can be prosecuted for their crime.”
Society staff have named the mother Casey and believe she’s a border collie-husky mix about one year old.
The SPCA says the puppies will be ready for adoption once they are about seven weeks old.
In the meantime, staff are asking for donations of puppy pads, teething toys, sheets, and small collars to help them care for the family.
Anyone with information about the case is asked call the BC SPCA’s toll-free hotline at 1-855-622-7722.
