RCMP in Fort St John are warning the public to be cautious of online sellers after a series of recent fraud scams.
In each of the incidents, a person identifying themselves as Jennifer Brooks contacted the victims through the online marketplace Fort St John Now.
This “Brooks” would feign interest in a product being sold by the victim and reach out to them online.
She would then forward them a cheque for an amount significantly higher than the agreed upon price.
Afterwards, she would tell victims to e-transfer her the overpaid amount.
Officers say the cheques appear very real and reference a real Vancouver business, but are fraudulent themselves.
