In yet another blow to the forestry industry, Canfor has announced the permanent closure of their Vavenby sawmill.
Canfor’s decision is set to cost more than 170 forestry workers their jobs when the shut down goes through next month.
According to the company, the tough choice had to be made due to long-term log supply constraints, increasing operational costs, and a depleting market.
Interfor will be purchasing the forest tenure associated with the mill for 60 million dollars.
According to the plot’s new owners, purchasing the tenure will allow them to maintain operations at their Adams Lake sawmill.
While commenting on the closure, Forest Minister Doug Donaldson says that, though the news is disappointing, he believes the province will find an innovative solution to the problems currently faced by the industry.
He also says the province will work with Canfor and their employees to co-ordinate support programs for the ex-workers.
