The BC Wildfire Service and Regional District of Kitimat-Stikine are hoping to cut the wildfire risk around Dease Lake.
The fuel management project, which will cover 23 hectares in the spring and summer, includes pruning, thinning, clearing and burning, or chipping flammable materials like trees, vegetation, and dead wood.
Officials say burning and chipping will only take place when weather and site conditions are suitable.
Trees that are cut down will be used as firewood by community residents while larger pieces that can’t be removed will be left to provide habitat for plants and animals, and a source of nutrients for soil.
The wildfire services says treatment areas were identified as facing a high wildfire risk and made a high priority to be treated in the Cassiar Community Wildfire Protection Plan, which includes the communities of Iskut, Telegraph Creek and Dease Lake.
