According to AFN National Chief Perry Bellegarde, it is crucial that legislation focused around First Nations child welfare passes during this session of Parliament.
Chief Bellegarde stood before the Standing Committee on Indigenous and Northern Affairs yesterday to stress the importance of Bill C-92.
Bill C-92 recognizes and affirms First Nations rights to raise their children in accordance with their cultures and customs.
If passed, the Bill would set a national framework utilizing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples, and the Jordan’s Principle as guides.
Bill C-92 received its first House reading in late February but, with this session of Parliament ending in June, it has yet to receive the green light.
