10 of BC’s 27 staffed lighthouses will be switching from diesel to renewable energy sources over the next few years.
Currently, most of the lighthouses run off of 24-hour diesel generators, causing an abundance of both environmental and noise pollution.
Yesterday, the government greenlit a plan to install wind turbines, solar panels, and battery banks at the 10 locations.
This will bring the locations in line with stations such as the Boat Bluff Lighthouse near Prince Rupert, which has already seen the installation of solar panels.
The diesel stations will remain at the sites as a source of back-up power if needed.
