A premature seal pup is recovering in Vancouver after it was rescued from the North Coast.
The Vancouver Aquarium Marine Mammal Rescue Centre’s first tiny patient of the year was found alone near Prince Rupert May 1.
According to a news release, the animal still has remnants of his umbilical cord attached and is covered in the soft, downy hair often seen on premature seal pups.
Aquarium staff named the feisty animal Dwayne ‘The Rockfish’ Johnson after the movie star and former WWE wrestler in keeping with this year’s ocean-themed puns for naming seal pups.
Officials say Dwayne had an “epic journey” from Prince Rupert to the rescue centre, but is doing well after getting some fluids and nutrition.
The rescue centre says this is the time of year when newborn pups are spotted alone on the beach while their mothers look for food.
This is normal and you should keep pets away and not approach the pups.
If the animal looks injured or appears to be in distress, you can call 604-258-SEAL (7325).
