Rising temperatures have prompted the Northwest Fire Centre to ban Category 2 open fires in some areas.
The prohibition for the Nadina, Bulkley, and Skeena fire zones takes effect at noon on Monday, May 6.
The Cassiar Fire Zone north of Stewart and Bell II which extends to the Yukon border is not affected.
The Northwest Fire Centre calls is a proactive approach to help prevent any backyard burns or grass fires spreading to nearby forests.
The definition of a Category 2 open fire is:
* one to two concurrently burning piles no larger than two metres wide by two metres high; or
* the burning of stubble or grass over an area less than 0.2 hectares.
Not included in this ban are fireworks, including firecrackers, tiki torches, sky lantern, outdoor stoves, burn barrels, or exploding targets.
Larger Category 3 open fires are not banned right now, but the fire centre plans to contact holders of burn registration numbers and ask them not to burn piles for the foreseeable future.
