A comprehensive report in to the 2017 wildfire season conducted by the Ts^ilhqot’in National Government has brought forward 33 calls to action.
TNG Tribal Chair Chief Joe Alphonse highlighted the plight and frustrations of Chilcotin area First Nations when he presented the report to government officials today.
Chief Alphonse says the report aims to bring forward a better understanding of the often misunderstood or missing voice of Indigenous peoples.
Trust and collaboration were common themes among a number of the calls to action, which seek to increase First Nations involvement in emergency management, establish government funded programs and prevention work, and build and upgrade fire prevention and protection infrastructure.
The report was part of a tripartite Emergency Management Agreement signed between the TNG and federal and provincial governments last April.
