Changes to BC’s criminal justice policies will address bias and systematic discrimination against Indigenous peoples.
In a statement released today, the BC Prosecution Service says the system is failing Indigenous residents.
Indigenous individuals across Canada face a much higher incarceration rate than the rest of the population.
In order to address this, the Service is revising their policies in relation to bail rulings, probation, and criminal charge considerations.
Under the new bail policy, Crown Counsel are being told to only seek pre-trial detention if an individual is violent, or at risk of fleeing.
Revisions to the charging and probation policies ask prosecutors to consider the effects of colonialism, and Indigenous peoples’ unique situations when determining charges and considerations.
In addition, the Service says charges levied against Indigenous women and girls should be considered as a push towards prosecution.
